Best Products; Amazon, Kobo

Editor's Note: We reviewed our current product picks to ensure they are in stock, available, and accurately priced. We are confident that these are the best e-readers on the market as of April 2023. If you're looking for the best overall e-reader and are ready to add to cart now, we recommend the 11th Generation Kindle Paperwhite. For this most recent update, we added a few new models from Amazon and Kobo plus we considered a new e-reader from Barnes & Noble. Although some readers may appreciate that it uses physical buttons for page-turning, we've omitted the Nook GlowLight 4E from our lineup because it has lesser battery life, lacks a waterproof construction, and has a less responsive touchscreen.

E-books are the best way to read (besides, you know, the good ol’ hardcover). Unlike smartphones and tablets that have bright and crisp LCD or OLED displays, e-book readers feature E-Ink screens that are solely developed for long reading sessions, with power efficiency in mind. They also are much more incognito since the world won’t be able to see the cover of whatever it is you’re reading.

Whether you're gifting an e-reader to yourself, a student, or an avid reader, the giftee will immediately appreciate the benefits of these tablet-like devices without having to deal with strained eyes or the harmful effects of blue light from using a smartphone or tablet.

I’ve personally gifted my significant other, both of my parents, and my sister an e-reader. To make the gift even more personalized and special, I recommend opening it up and loading it with books that you know they will love or books that you love. Not only does it mean they can hop right in and get sucked into a good book, they don’t have to deal with the stress of buying books and charging the e-reader, and it gives you both something to share and discuss.

What to Consider

Ecosystem + File Support

Currently, there are three major players on the market for e-book readers: Amazon, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble via its Nook line of devices. It's worth noting that each of the three vendors offers a free reading app for smartphones and tablets, so you can explore its library of titles and perks before buying.

All Kindle e-books you purchase from Amazon are stored in a proprietary file format that's exclusive to Amazon devices — although the Kindles support a more common .MOBI format, too. EPUB files are also a common file format that's essentially the book equivalent of an MP3. Kobo e-readers, on the other hand, can handle 15 formats — with the exception of Amazon's .AZW format. This means you can easily read PDFs, text files, comics, and even graphic novels on your Kobo e-reader.

Battery Life

E-ink displays use relatively little power, meaning the battery life for all of our recommended e-readers is quite long. The best e-readers offer up to 6 weeks of use on a single charge, while more inexpensive e-readers last about 2 weeks less before needing charging.

Features

Just in the last three years, e-readers have improved significantly. They feature higher-resolution displays, offer support for Bluetooth for listening to audiobooks, and some are even waterproof. A quick note on the latter: Most manufacturers claim their e-readers are either water-resistant or waterproof.

Water-resistant means the e-readers can survive small splashes of water, rain, sweat, a drop in the snow, or a spill. On the other hand, waterproof devices can withstand being completely submerged or soaked in water, giving you peace of mind during those inevitable accidental drops in a body of water, like a pool or toilet. You should also pay attention to useful features like adjustable backlighting, water-resistance ratings, and Bluetooth.

For a reading experience you can take on the go (no more hardback books to lug around in your tote or carry-on!), we've rounded up the best e-readers on the market to buy for yourself or to give as a gift.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader (11th Generation)

$140 at Amazon
Pros
  • Sharp and bright screen, thanks to high resolution and backlighting
  • Up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge
  • Completely waterproof
  • Uses USB-C for faster charging speeds
Cons
  • Only has 8GB of storage
  • No cellular connectivity option

The Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-reader on the market. It's thin, lightweight, and, best of all: It's completely waterproof. Despite costing over $100 less, it has the same resolution as the more expensive Oasis model, so the text is crisp and easy to read. Plus, it's backlit by 17 LEDs, so it's perfect for night owls.

The Paperwhite weighs less than an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and it measures 6.9 inches tall, making it comfortable to hold, compact, and light enough to fit in a small bag or even a back pocket. If you're gifting it to an audiobook lover, don't fret it plays those, too since it's equipped with Bluetooth.

If you're willing to spend $20 extra for an e-reader that comes with a case, consider the $160 Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition, which also adds a 2-year extended replacement guarantee. The Kids edition includes a year of Amazon's “Kids+” subscription, but even if you won't use the service, at least you'll have peace of mind knowing your new e-reader is protected by a magnetic case and a longer warranty.

Amazon Kindle E-Reader

Pros
  • Extremely affordable
  • Great battery life
  • Backlit display
Cons
  • Isn’t waterproof

If your budget is around $100, this entry-level Kindle offers few compromises and still delivers an outstanding reading experience. It also has twice the storage space as the Kindle Paperwhite, which comes in handy if the person you're buying for listens to many audiobooks.

Previous iterations of the Kindle featured a much lower resolution display, but this newer model is equipped with a similar 300ppi display as pricier models. This means the screen is responsive, easy on the eyes, and refreshes fast. It's also backlit for nighttime reading.

Even though the Kindle has a shorter battery life than other Amazon e-reader models — you get 6 weeks, compared to the other model's 10 weeks — that's still plenty of time to read on a vacation without worrying about finding an outlet!

Amazon Kids E-reader

Pros
  • Backed a 2-year long warranty
  • Includes a protective case
Cons
  • Is not waterproof

The Amazon Kindle Kids Edition is essentially the standard Kindle we previously mentioned, but with a more kid-friendly design. It sports the same 6-inch glare-free display and even comes with a colorful cover to protect it from scratches.

This Kindle, unfortunately, is not waterproof. On the plus side, it's backed by a 2-year worry-free guarantee, which means that Amazon will replace the Kindle if it breaks from accidents like drops or spills.

Every purchase of a Kindle Kids Edition comes with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. This service grants access to timeless kid-friendly classics like The Boxcar Children and popular series like Harry Potter.

Parents can set educational goals and manage content thanks to the Kindle's integrated parental controls, and the device's Vocabulary Builder feature creates flashcards for your child to learn new words. Overall, it's an excellent device at a great value that'll help encourage kids to read more.

Kobo Libra 2 E-Reader

Pros
  • Comfortable to handle
  • Physical page-turning buttons
  • Waterproof
  • Automatically adjusts brightness
Cons
  • No speakers
  • Page turning isn’t as fast as Kindle

The word “Kindle” is practically synonymous with the term “e-reader,” but for those who would rather opt for something else, we recommend the Kobo Libra 2. Like the Paperwhite from Amazon, it supports Bluetooth for listening to audiobooks, uses USB-C for faster charging, and packs a 7-inch display with the same 300-ppi resolution, meaning the text is crisp and easy to read.

What separates Kobo e-readers from the Kindle is their wider file support, so you can download books obtained outside of Amazon's online bookstore. Not only that, you can use OverDrive to easily borrow books from your library for free.

If you're gifting to someone who reads a lot of books or listens to a lot of audiobooks, this is the best e-reader to get since it has a larger 32GB hard drive compared to the Paperwhite's 8GB drive. It also has an automatically adjusting backlight, which comes in handy for reading at nighttime or outside.

It's also worth mentioning that some users who previously owned an Amazon Kindle may find it difficult to migrate and transfer their previous library to the Kobo. Regardless, the Libra 2 is a feature-filled e-reader that definitely gives Amazon Kindles a run for their money!

Kobo Clara 2E E-Reader

Pros
  • Its exterior is made from more than 85% recycled plastic
  • Built-in Bluetooth for audiobook listening
Cons
  • It’s easy to accidentally turn the page

The Kobo Clara HD is a Kindle Paperwhite competitor made from mostly recycled materials. It features a gorgeous and crisp 300ppi screen, 16GB of storage, and a large battery that should last a month on a single charge. It's also backlit, has Bluetooth for audiobooks, and supports more file formats than Amazon's Kindle lineup (but you can't read books you downloaded from a previous Kindle on it).

What sets it apart from the Kindle is its ComfortLight PRO feature that reduces the amount of blue light the screen puts off as the day progresses, making it especially easy on your eyes at nighttime.

We also were happy to see that the model is completely waterproof. On the plus side, Kobo's e-readers support OverDrive integration — a free service that lets you borrow eBooks from your local library's digital collection.

Amazon Kindle Oasis E-Reader

Pros
  • 3G connectivity for wirelessly downloading books
  • Built to withstand water splashes
  • Page color can be changed from white to amber
Cons
  • Extremely expensive

If you're gifting for a bookworm or just want to treat yourself to latest and greatest e-book reader and can afford its higher-end price, the Kindle Oasis is the best e-reader money can buy. It's more compact, travel-friendly, durable, and sharper than any other Kindle. Compared to the similarly shaped Kobo Sage, it feels more upscale since it uses aluminum and glass compared to the Sage's plastic body.

The Oasis weighs just 6.6 ounces, and it's just 3.4 millimeters thick at its thinnest point, which makes for good one-handed reading. The Oasis has an aluminum backside and comes in champagne gold or graphite colors. Plus, it offers up to 6 weeks of battery life.

It’s the only Kindle with an adjustable warm light, meaning you can change the “page” color from white to amber to better resemble the color of actual paper. No other Kindle offers users 3G compatibility, either, so users can download books without a Wi-Fi connection, which is another nice perk for this premium Kindle.

Other E-Readers We Considered

linebreak
  • Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition: This more-premium (and expensive) variant of the Paperwhite features four times more storage space (32 GB) than the base model Paperwhite, a better backlight that automatically adjusts itself depending on lighting conditions, and support for wireless charging. Although these features are nice to have, we don’t think they are worth the difference in price over the base model.
  • Kindle Paperwhite Kids: The “Kids” edition of the Kindle Paperwhite is identical to our best overall pick, except it doesn’t display ads when it’s in sleep mode. It also comes with a protective case and is backed by a two-year warranty. If you’re willing to spend ~$20 more than the price of the standard Paperwhite, these extras may be worth the price premium to you.
  • Kobo Sage: The Kobo Sage is a waterproof e-reader with an 8-inch display that’s an inch larger than the competing Kindle Oasis. It’s a good option for manga readers or people who want something with a bigger display. However, it’s pricier, not as durable, and a bit harder to use than competing e-readers.
