Editor's Note: We reviewed our current recommended picks to ensure they are in stock, available, and accurately priced. We are confident that these are the best small TVs on the market as of January 2023.

Even though large-screen 4K TVs are all the rage these days, there's still a huge market for compact TV sets with a screen size of 43 inches or less. Whether you're shopping for a TV to put in your guest room, apartment, or dormitory, I've researched and evaluated more than 50 different small TVs from the likes of Samsung, Vizio, and LG, among others.

What to Consider

Screen Size and Resolution

The biggest factor in your smart TV buying decision will likely be its screen size. Screens are measured diagonally from corner to corner. Normally most people would agree that bigger is better, but a big TV won't do you much good if you don't have room for it.

Resolution refers to the number of pixels that compose your TV's picture. Small TVs (around 32 inches) typically have a 720p resolution. Resolution is important to keep in mind because it helps increase the clarity of the image. In terms of image quality, 720p resolution TVs are good, 1080p Full HD TVs are better, and or 4K Ultra HD TVs are the best.

Refresh Rate

This figure is expressed in Hertz (Hz). It tells you how many times per second a new frame can be put on the screen. 60 Hz TVs refresh the display image 60 times each second. A higher refresh rate makes for a smoother motion for live sports and video games. I recommend shopping for TVs with 120 Hz refresh rates, especially if you are a gamer.

Panel Type

Just like back in the day when you had to decide on an LCD or plasma display, now, you have to pick from an organic, light-emitting diode display (OLED), liquid crystal display (LCD), an LED or a quantum dot LED TV (QLED). It's worth mentioning that OLEDs can't get as bright as LCD, LED, or QLED TVs, so they are more susceptible to reflections in bright rooms.

Operating System

Similar to shopping for a smartphone and deciding between Android (Google) or iOS (Apple) operating systems, smart TVs run different operating systems, too. Sony TVs run Google TV, Samsung TVs use an OS called Tizen, and LG models use webOS, to name a few. I prefer Google TV and Roku TV to other operating systems since they are more intuitive and not as ad-filled.

HDMI Ports

I recommend shopping for a TV with at least three HDMI ports, which are the jacks you’ll need for plugging in external devices such as video game consoles and streaming devices. If you game a lot or are an audiophile, you should shop for a TV with HDMI 2.1 ports, which have more bandwidth.

I spent 100-plus hours researching and comparing the best small TVs on the market. Our recommended models will not only fit a small space, but also offer the best picture and audio quality. They come with all the ports you could possibly need for your video game consoles and home theater system. Here are the most reliable small TVs you can buy.

    Pros
    • Operating system is polished and easy to use
    • You can listen to the TV with Bluetooth headphones
    • It operating system doesn't have as many ads as other smart TVs
    • Remote is easy to use
    Cons
    • Only has a 720p resolution

The TCL 32S334 features a sleek design, a 32-inch 720p display panel, and a built-in Google TV streaming player. (If you prefer Roku's platform, you should opt for the similar TCL 32S335 model). Both operating systems easily allow the TV to stream content from popular services such as Amazon, HBO, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and ESPN.

A reviewer at Wirecutter said that the 3-Series is a great all-in-one TV with good picture, sound quality, and better black levels and brightness than the competition.

We previously recommended the 32S327 TV from TCL as our best overall small TV because it offers a more detailed 1080p picture and has three HDMI ports compared to the 3-Series' two. However, that model is from 2019 and lacks useful features like Bluetooth audio support and voice controls, and it doesn't have an Ethernet port.

Lastly, for those who can afford the space (and the budget) to go a little bigger, we recommend the TCL 4-Series TV, which will stretch your dollar further than other 43-inch TVs.

    Cons
    • Typically more expensive than the competition

The Frame, which doubles as a stunning art exhibition when you're not watching your favorite shows, is a fresh new take on a high-end TV by Samsung. When in art mode, the small TV can display more than 100 gorgeous free works of art, as well as your personal photos.

As its name suggests, the TV looks like a frame when mounted on the wall. Users also have the option to add a wood frame or border to better match their home decor. The Frame also comes bundled with Samsung's no-gap wall mount, so it sits flush against your wall.

When it comes to picture quality, the Frame features an ultra-HD 4K and support for HDR, so it's much more vivid than most small televisions. If you want a unique television that is unlike any other, you can't go wrong with this one!

This 43-inch TV by Hisense features four HDMI inputs, while most other small TVs only have one or two. The display offers a crisp 4K Ultra HD resolution and a 60 Hz refresh rate with minimal motion blur, which means that it's a good choice for gamers, too.

It also has a built-in Google TV streaming device so you can watch your favorite shows and movies online. You can control it with your voice since it has a built-in microphone. (If voice control isn't your thing, though, the microphone can be disabled.)

    • Outstanding picture quality
    • Perfect black levels
    Cons
    • Although video games look fantastic on the C2, Sony TVs have exclusive gaming features that the LG lacks

The C2 series of 4K OLED TVs by LG offers the best picture quality possible in a small TV — but one will cost you a pretty penny. They offer sleek design, intelligent image processing, a rich set of connectivity settings, and LG's feature-packed smart TV platform.

If you can afford it, the C2 series is the best small TV money can buy. It delivers a surprisingly robust virtual 7.1.2 channel surround sound, deeper blacks, higher contrast, and improved viewing angles. You can also cast video from your iPhone or tablet using AirPlay 2, plus search for content and perform tasks with voice commands.

If you're a gamer, we recommend splurging a little extra for the BRAVIA XR A90K 4K HDR OLED TV with Google TV from Sony. That model is available in 42- and 48-inch variants, but it supports 4K gaming at 120Hz and is equipped with the proper HDMI 2.1 ports so you can have two next-generation consoles plugged in simultaneously for peak performance.

Sony Class X85K 4K HDR LED TV with Google TV

    Pros
    • Has 4 HDMI ports (2 of which have HDMI 2.1 capability)
    • Packs plenty of gaming-centric features like ALLM, VRR, and Auto HDR Tone Mapping
    Cons
    • No support for FreeSync (a feature commonly found on gaming monitors to reduce stuttering and eliminate screen tearing)

Small TVs often can seem as though they are a bit of an afterthought for most major TV brands. Meaning if you want the latest and greatest tech and features, you'd be better off shopping for a larger-sized TV. That's not the case with the X85K from Sony.

It's much more future-proof, feature-filled, and doesn't feel like a budget model like most other small TVs do. For starters, the Sony features two HDMI 2.1 inputs, which make it fully compatible with the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles. Very few small TVs feature a single HDMI 2.1 port — let alone two of them. Plus, the Sony has two other HDMI ports on top of the 2.1 ports for plugging in your other peripherals — be it a soundbar or streaming device.

PlayStation owners can even take advantage of Sony-exclusive features such as Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture, which you can learn more about in this informative HDTVTest video.

The TV also supports variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low latency mode (ALLM). The former matches the TV’s refresh rate to the game console’s rate, and the latter ensures the image remains smooth on-screen even if the frame rate drops.

Overall, if you don't want to drop nearly a grand on an OLED TV like the LG C2 we previously mentioned, the Sony X85K stretches your dollar further and will deliver outstanding picture quality, a full sound, and excellent gaming performance for a price that's more reasonable.

    Pros
    • 1080p resolution
    • Chromecast support
    Cons
    • Only 2 HDMI ports

This 24-inch Vizio D-Series TV allows you to cast content from your favorite streaming apps and services via your mobile device. Key features of this small TV include a 1080p LED display panel and Dolby Atmos audio support. Features like these aren't available on small TVs in competing price ranges like the Insignia Class F20 Series, and they will definitely improve your overall viewing experience.

You can control this small TV by using your voice through your Google Assistant-powered smart speaker. The TV conveniently has AirPlay 2 onboard for easily mirroring your iPhone's display. This feature definitely comes in handy for those who always lose the remote and want to control playback from your smartphone.

If 24 inches is too small for your setup, Vizio sells configurations of this model with 32-, 40-, and 43-inch-sized displays.

    Pros
    • 1080p resolution
    • Has a sturdy stand
    Cons
    • Only has 2 HDMI ports

This basic small TV from Samsung is equipped with a 32-inch 1080p LED display that offers a more detailed picture compared to other models since many small TVs only have a 720p resolution. My biggest complaint is that this model has just two HDMI ports, while others in its price range offer at least three ports.

On the plus side, the TV has Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows it to stream video or music from many popular services, including Netflix, Amazon, and Spotify. Samsung sells a similar variant of this TV that comes in a 40-inch size as well.

Samsung Q60A Series 32-inch QLED Smart TV

    Pros
    • Incredible picture quality
    • Perfect for gaming
    Cons
    • Expensive

Editor's Note: This TV's successor is now available for purchase, but it's worth mentioning that the smallest variant is 43 inches, compared to the Q60A's 32 inches. Last year's model was still in stock at the time of publishing.

If you're looking for a best-in-class, HDR-compatible 32-inch smart TV that offers a truly incredible, lifelike picture and stellar audio, look no further than this option from Samsung. It packs all of your favorite streaming apps, has voice controls, and supports AirPlay 2, so content can be cast from your smartphone or tablet directly to the TV. It also has three HDMI inputs on board — while most other models its size only pack two.

However, compared to other 32-inch TVs, it's steeper in price. But we think if you're limited to a 32-inch model, it's worth splurging for given its extensive feature set and outstanding picture quality.

    LG 24-Inch 720p LED TV

    Pros
    • Sleek design
    Cons
    • Only 1 HDMI port

A perfect option for a small kitchen, this LG TV comes in silver to match all your stainless steel appliances. This small TV option has a 24-inch HD display panel and basic functionality. But it has just a single HDMI port for installing a streaming device or video game console, which may be a deal-breaker for some. It’s also worth mentioning that this TV is not “smart,” meaning you can’t install any streaming apps on it.

The TV's Triple XD Engine helps create stunning, lifelike image quality. It's worth mentioning that the similarly priced 24-inch VIZIO D-Series TV I previously mentioned is priced the same and offers a higher resolution, which means it has better image quality. But if aesthetics matter most, the LG looks better.

    Pros
    • Great balance between price and performance
    • Wide variety of ports
    Cons
    • Smart interface isn’t as good as other options

This option from Samsung is one of the most affordable 4K TVs the manufacturer currently offers. It has a good contrast ratio and lets you watch stunning high-dynamic-range content. It’s equipped with three HDMI ports and two USB jacks, and it runs Samsung’s Tizen Smart TV platform, so you can download and stream all your favorite shows from numerous apps.

I think its 43-inch size is the perfect balance between being small enough for most setups and large enough to experience all that 4K content has to offer. Because of its low input lag and excellent motion handling, this model is ideal for gamers and will work well as a PC monitor.

If you have a bigger budget and don't mind a larger screen, opt for Samsung's 43-inch Q60B Series QLED model, which delivers a better and more immersive picture.
