What to Consider When Buying a Smokeless Fire Pit

Aside from the obvious safety precautions, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when buying a smokeless fire pit:

    • Fuel Source: The source of fuel is probably the first thing you want to consider. If you don’t want to deal with foraging or buying firewood, a propane-powered fire pit is your best option. By contrast, if you prefer firewood, pellets, or charcoal, look for models that indicate those as fuel sources.
    • Material: We like steel for its durability and sleek, modern design. For a pit designed to last for the long haul, granite is also a solid choice because it withstands extreme temperatures and won't rust or fade. Lastly, if lighting up a fire pit is all about getting lost in the cinematic, soul-soothing experience of watching the flames flicker, seek out models with mesh paneling for a superior viewing experience.
    • Size: Size and style matter, and both are a matter of personal preference. Fire pits range from 15 to over 40 inches in diameter to accommodate as many as 10 people. Choose the size that makes sense for you and your outdoor space. Obviously, the lighter the fire pit the easier it is to move or travel with.
    • Accessories: Many fire pit manufacturers sell useful accessories like cooking equipment, covers and carrying cases, fire pokers, and ash shovels. If these are important to you consider bundling them with whatever fire pit model you choose.

We rounded up our top picks across the most popular fire pit categories, from camping-ready offerings to easy-to-maintain propane tables, or options that are perfect for open-flame cookouts. Get ready for marshmallow season with these highly vetted and tested smokeless fire pits.

    Pros
    • Highly portable and weighs a little over 20 pounds
    • Removing the ashes is easier with the Solo Stove than other models
    • Very low smoke
    • Comes pre-assembled and includes a carrying case
    Cons
    • The stand — which is recommended if you plan to put the fire pit on a surface other than concrete — isn’t included

The Solo Stove offers great air circulation, which results in a healthy and incredibly mesmerizing flame with minimal to no smoke. It’s twice as light in weight as other fire pits we tested, so you can easily move and store it when it’s not in use, but still is highly durable.

The smokeless fire pit has received high praise from outdoor gear experts at Reviewed, Better Homes & Gardens, and Wirecutter for its even heat distribution, its sleek design, and its removable ash pan — which eases the cleanup process.

When I tested it in the fall of 2022, I found building a fire with it to be incredibly easy. The fire pit projected a lot of heat (with flames extending nearly 2 feet out the top) and I like that the brand sells a wide range of bundles that come with useful accessories like a stand, a shield to prevent sparks, and a lid to make the fire pit double as an outdoor table when it's not in use.

It’s worth mentioning that Solo Stove makes and sells four different sizes of fire pits. There’s an even smaller Ranger fire pit that has a diameter of just 15 inches perfect for campers, the 27-inch Yukon offers plenty of room for a family of five to encircle but weighs 42 pounds.

The much more affordable and twice-lighter Solo Stove Bonfire is the one we recommend for most. It comfortably accommodates four people.

“If you want a smokeless fire pit that lives up to the hype, looks great, and fits in at home or on an occasional weekend of car camping, then the Bonfire is a solid option,” said my colleague Bradley Ford — who also tested the Solo Stove.

    Pros
    • Its base doubles as an ashtray for an easy cleanup
    • Gives off a lot of heat
    Cons
    • Hard to fill with wood given its curved bowl-like shape

If a low-smoke fire pit is a priority, this model from Cuisinart is a stellar choice. During our tests, we only noticed smoke immediately after lighting it for a brief moment. Fuel this compact smokeless fire pit with wooden logs, and the double-wall design helps make smoke a non-issue while you savor that early morning cup of coffee or roast 'mallows with the crew.

(Science geeks: The bottom vents pull oxygen in, feeding the flames from below while traveling between the double walls, causing air to get hotter. This heated air then travels through holes at the top of the unit, while burning off any ash debris or smoke that the flames create.)

No assembly is required and clean-up is seamless thanks to a removable base ashtray. The integrated handle is another nice design feature, and it's conveniently located in the lock-in base.

"A slight disadvantage of the concave shape is that, although we fit 14-inch logs in it, they wouldn’t drop to the bottom," said our tester. "This made it more difficult to fill the fire pit and keep a bigger fire going."

On the plus side, a wind-guard is included, so you can still enjoy storytime or happy hour by the campfire on those blustery nights!

    Pros
    • Is sturdier and more durable than the competition
    • Breo offers a wide range of accessories that will make it easier to cook on an open flame
    Cons
    • No ash-management system
    • No accessories are included, and once you start adding them the cost goes up quickly

The X Series is available in three sizes: 22 inches (from $399), 27.5 inches (from $599), and 34.5 inches (from $1,399) so you can pick the one that works best for your space. What separates Breeo’s fire pits from the competition is that it’s made from thicker, heavier, and more durable materials. It’s even backed by a lifetime warranty so you can be confident it’ll hold up over time.

I tested the 27-inch variant, which can accommodate five people. I found that it emitted a little bit more smoke than the Solo Stove, but it wasn’t as smoky as a traditional fire pit. It weighs 47 pounds, which is 20 pounds heavier than our best overall pick, the Solo Stove Bonfire. Given its weight and the fact that it doesn't have handles, it's not very portable and you'll need two people to move it.

The Breeo is a great smokeless fire pit to gift given its versatility. It’s the best fire pit to slide into an existing firepit surround, and you can shop plenty of accessories to make it better suited for cooking on. There’s a grill plate, a griddle, a kettle hook, a cast-iron kettle, and more.

I recommend opting for the sear plate griddle which extends its rim a couple of inches and provides a high-heat, cooktop to the fire pit that could likely replace your giftee’s camp stove.

Buyers can choose between a classic stainless-steel finish or corten steel finish, which develops a natural and rustic-looking reddish patina over time.

    Pros
    • Can be set up in a minute
    • Extremely portable
    • Serves as a good ice-breaker and will draw a crowd
    Cons
    • Doesn't output a lot of heat

This propane-fueled fire pit is great for the tailgating set. It also keeps safety concerns top of mind, particularly for people who live out west where burn bans for wood are becoming the standard, given the influx of wildfires.

Without the need to burn wood, the FireCan allows for safer campfires and warming fires. It's a cinch to set up and pack away when the tailgate, camping adventure, or other gathering is over.

While the ammo can design isn't the most visually stunning, once the fire is lit, we like that the mesh sides amp up the fire-gazing experience from all angles (the ammo can design also makes it easier to stow and carry around with you, so there's that).

FYI: The FireCan comes with everything you need to enjoy that perfect après-ski fire or s'mores roast, including the adjustable regulator and hose for easy setup to a propane source. Add-ons include the refillable gas growler deluxe and fire rocks, which create dancing flames for a more summer camp-worthy glow.

    Pros
    • Comes with a pellet fire-starter bag
    • Sophisticated design that’ll blend into any patio setup
    Cons
    • Heavy and difficult to travel with

Looking for a fire pit that’s easy to clean and will immediately spruce up any patio? You found your match! The Tiki is a sophisticated 25-inch smokeless fire pit with a sleek, black powder-coated finish and raised hairpin legs, and it provides above-average heating performance.

Typically, smokeless fire pits pull air in from the bottom edge of their bodies, but this one pulls the air in through its horizontal slats, so smoke won’t leave your eyes watering and your clothes smelling like a summer camp.

“Initially, we were concerned with how effective this would be in fostering a smokeless fire but those concerns were unfounded, as the fires we lit in the Patio Fire Pit were as smokeless as any we tested,” said our tester Bradley Ford.

Another nice perk? Cleanup should be an absolute breeze thanks to a removable ash pan. The fire pit includes a pellet fire starter bag, but it can also be used with wood. The Tiki is backed by a 2-year warranty.

    • Lightweight
    • Doubles as a portable grill
    Cons
    • It’s made from thin pressed metal that has a greater potential to rust over time

If you’re hoping to gift an ultra-lightweight and portable wood-burning firepit, we recommend this option from BioLite that’s perfect for the nomad in your life. Consider pairing it with this nifty canvas carrying bag if you really want to spoil them.

Given its small 27 x 13 x 15.8 in footprint, its under 20-pound weight, and its compact folding legs, the BioLite is the most portable fire pit we tested. Unlike any other fire pit we’ve tried, this one is equipped with a battery-powered fan that creates combustion conditions to ensure you have a smokeless fire and allows you to control the intensity and size of the flames.

My colleagues at Good Housekeeping and Popular Mechanics also appreciated the fire pit’s X-ray mesh body which gives you a full view of the logs while they’re burning and makes you feel the heat better onto your lower legs.

It’s worth mentioning that BioLite sells an accessory kit with a grill lid, cast-iron griddle, and utensils that’ll definitely come in handy for campers who hope to cook on the FirePit’s included grill grate!

    • Durable and easy to clean
    • Much cheaper than the competition
    Cons
    • The ash-collection tray is harder to remove than competing fire pits

For those in search of a portable but durable smokeless fire pit that won’t break the bank, consider the Blue Sky Outdoor Living Ridge fire pit. It comes in three sizes that are priced between $80 and $240. We think most people should opt for the mid-sized 22-inch model which typically hovers just above the $200 price point.

Kit Dillon, senior writer at Wirecutter who tested the Ridge remarked that thanks to its wide diameter, you can more easily stack standard logs. “If you don’t mind The Peak’s stealth-bomber looks, the price is irresistible for a sturdy and well-made smokeless fire pit,” he wrote.

We also appreciate that the fire pit comes with an ash collector to ease the cleanup process. A carrying bag and shoulder strap are also included. Really, our biggest complaints about this fire pit are aesthetic ones. The Blue Sky logo at the base is a bit large, but it's used as a vent to supply airflow to the firebox.

Despite not looking as nice as other fire pits, the Ridge is made of a heavy gauge, rust-resistant stainless steel so you can be confident it'll last. Given its affordable price point, it's hard to pass up even if you're not a fan of its design.

    Pros
    • Extremely user-friendly
    • Stylish design that adds elegance to any outdoor space
    Cons
    • A cover isn't included

In the market for a fire pit table to add some elegance to any outdoor entertaining space? This pit table has a 50,000 BTU output to keep guests toasty warm.

We're swooning for the included arctic-ice-colored rocks for a pretty effect while the flames are flickering. The push-button ignition system makes it easy to start a fire — even at dusk — and a variable flame setting lets you customize how light or intense the flames are. Since the table is made from resin and wicker, it’s completely weather and rust-resistant.

This option conceals up to a 20-pound propane tank, which you can access on either side of the fire pit table. Consider shopping this accessory set, which includes tempered glass accents for a more modern design, and a protective cover to keep the fire pit table in tip-top shape.
